BODY POWDER
Body Powder and Mesothelioma Risk
Talc-based body powders beyond baby powder have been linked to mesothelioma and cancer. Learn about the products, exposure routes, health risks, and legal options.
BEYOND BABY POWDER
Body Powder Products and Talc Exposure
While Johnson & Johnson's Baby Powder has received the most attention in talc litigation, it is far from the only talc-based product that poses a health risk. A wide range of body powder products have contained talc and may have been contaminated with asbestos.
Body powders are marketed for moisture absorption, friction reduction, and personal freshness. They have been used by men and women on various parts of the body for decades. Many consumers used body powder daily as part of their hygiene routine, resulting in significant cumulative exposure.
How Exposure Occurs
Body powder exposure follows the same pathways as baby powder exposure:
- Inhalation: Applying body powder to the torso, underarms, feet, or other areas generates airborne particles that are inhaled, carrying asbestos fibers deep into the lungs
- Perineal application: Women who apply body powder to the genital area face the perineal exposure pathway to peritoneal mesothelioma and ovarian cancer
- Dermal contact: While skin absorption is less of a concern for asbestos fibers, the act of application creates inhalation exposure and potential perineal migration
- Environmental: Powder residue on clothing, bedding, and bathroom surfaces can become airborne when disturbed
Products Identified in Litigation
Talc litigation has expanded beyond baby powder to include a range of body powder products. Categories of products cited in litigation include:
- Adult body powders marketed for personal freshness and moisture control
- Medicated body powders (antifungal and skin-soothing formulations)
- Feminine hygiene powders specifically marketed for genital use
- Foot powders containing talc
- Store-brand and generic talcum powder products sold by major retailers
As litigation has progressed, retailers and distributors have increasingly been named as defendants alongside manufacturers, particularly for store-brand products.
Health Risks
The health risks from body powder containing asbestos-contaminated talc are the same as those from baby powder:
Mesothelioma
Caused by inhalation or perineal migration of asbestos fibers. Latency period of 20–50 years.
Ovarian Cancer
Linked to perineal use of talc. IARC classifies this exposure as "possibly carcinogenic."
Lung Cancer
Inhalation of asbestos-contaminated talc can cause lung cancer. Lung cancer filings are growing relative to mesothelioma.
Legal Claims for Body Powder Exposure
If you used any talc-based body powder product and have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, or another asbestos-related condition, you may have legal options. Legal claims can be filed against:
- Manufacturers: Companies that produced the talc-based powder
- Talc suppliers: Mining and processing companies that supplied contaminated talc
- Retailers: Stores that sold talc products, especially store-brand products
- Distributors: Companies in the supply chain between manufacturer and consumer
An experienced attorney can help identify the specific products you used, trace the talc supply chain, and determine all potentially responsible parties. Free case evaluations are available from most asbestos litigation attorneys.
